[Bug 293793] New: xmag does not work
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=293793 Summary: xmag does not work Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 6 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: mfabian@novell.com ReportedBy: coolo@novell.com QAContact: sndirsch@novell.com CC: lrupp@novell.com Found By: --- This is to track the lack of xorg-x11-fonts (40MB) from the one CD installation. The "9x13bold" font in this case is missing. We need to either reduce the size of the xorg-x11-fonts package or fix all X packages on the CD to use fonts we ship. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It would be worthwhile to figure the list of X apps and which fonts they require too. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This is to track the lack of xorg-x11-fonts (40MB) from the one CD installation. .. which obviously was a stupid idea, which needs to be reverted!

There aren't that many X apps we need - xmag can easily be dropped too from that install. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Perhaps we should start with that problem. I would even go as far as claiming that any tool that requires bitmap fonts isn't required on a lean desktop installation - exceptions only confirm the rule. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Which are the important requirements in xorg-x11 package for you? So each package, which includes Xapps, which still need bitmap fonts need to require the "big" bitmap font package in the future. Is this what you request? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I'm afraid we still would get bugreports for SLES12 for packages, which still forget to specifiy this requirement. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=293793#c9 --- Comment #9 from Mike Fabian <mfabian@novell.com> 2007-07-23 12:11:37 MST --- The nicest solution for applications like “xmag”, “xfd”, ... would be to rewrite them to use fontconfig/Xft for their menus. That would make sure that they always get a decent font because "fc-match sans" should always find something reasonable. Currently they use bitmap fonts via the X11 core font system. With this system, there is no other way but to hardcode font names. Unless you use "fixed", you can never be sure wether this hardcoded font name is really there if fonts disappear at random in some products. The only other alternative besides using "fixed" or rewriting the apps to use fontconfig/Xft would be to change their app-default files with SuSEconfig and put a reasonably good font which is available into the app-defaults. But that would be a very nasty hack. Rewriting to use Xft would be much nicer. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Think of 3rd party apps as well. Rewriting with SuSEconfig all the app-default files depending on the fonts currenly installed would be a pain. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

list of required fonts (according to mike)
Mike and me think we only need the misc/ and the unicode fonts. In Mike's list there are also 75dpi/ and non-unicode fonts, which confuses me. I need more details before I can work on this.
The rest can go into another sumo package. Maybe it would be better to move the "required" fonts from xorg-x11-fonts to xorg-fonts-core instead, so we won't need to introduce another subpackage?

we need the unicode fonts from 75dpi and the fonts in misc. This would be about 3,8 MB for 75dpi and 8,2 MB for misc/. Compressed about 8,9 MB.
And we need to fix any apps that still live in 8859-* world - but we should do that anyway. Right, but that's a different issue.

The menus are ASCII only anyway at the moment, it doesn't matter at all whether a Unicode font (iso10646-1) or any of the iso8859* fonts is used, they are all identical in the ASCII region anyway. Using the iso* wildcard makes xterm work even if the recoded versions of the bitmap fonts are missing in a minimal installation and only the Unicode versions are there. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
