These fields are not initialized when called via libdrm as its structure in /usr/include/drm/via_drm.h doesn't contain those new fields. Therefore via_do_init_map() most often reports "failed to find dma buffer region!" which in turn disables DMA usage in openchrome driver and therefore xxmc support. XxMC is one of the most broken things i have seen so far, and that is no idle statement, even in comparison to what i have been doing for the last 6 years. Slice decoding on unichrome depends on register writes, not on moving big blobs of memory around (even though the latter, from where i sit, would've made more sense). Dma should not be involved here. The brokenness here is in the way unichrome XvMC-vld is implemented and how people in their Mash-it-all-into-DRM mindset implemented XvMC, and then later worsened it by providing the XvMCWrapper. What should have been a tiny set of registers, with a limited amount of setup and a very specific way of getting slice data into the engine, together with a small bit of syncing with the rest of video subsystem, turned out in some behemoth which involves everything you can imagine, it even waits for the 2D rendering engine to go idle. When you see such illogical connections made, no wonder it depends on things like DMA. Anyway, I will provide a saner XvMC-vld solution soon, one that fits within the horrible mess that is XvMC today. This will work just as well when not using DRM, heck, if the toplevel XvMC would've not been thrashed, it would've even been happy sending stuff over the network (how cool would that be, sending highly compressed MPEG data with your X client over the network?). With this code, my main goal is not to give yet another lesson in graphics driver development, but mainly to prove how little people really still care about hardware accelerated MPEG2 decoding. Reinhard, what hw are you using? As my code has only proper support for the VT3122/VT7205/VT3108 video subsystem, and not for the reworked later ones (which never got properly implemented in openchrome anyway). Disabling DMA and XxMC are just side effects (even though XxMC really shouldn't care). The real first symptom is that DRM initialization fails completely (again, should not directely affect any video playback, just indirectly). My further side-effects are that my driver falls back to the xf86 memory manager for allocation, with only the memory that was initialized reserved for FB and pixmaps available as space is still reserved for the DRM. So i cannot allocate all the buffers i need for XxMC (not when you need some intermediate buffers too), and then the Xv client ends up giving up having received a BadAlloc. Which is how i got looped back here :) Now, the root cause of the problem is indeed as you described. For some reason, it seems that we included VIAs own code into the opensuse 11.1 via drm driver, while not updating libdrm. One cannot build either unichrome or openchrome against this header, as they both (think that they) require infrastructure not present in this header. This is again, partly, because of more fundamental issues with the Xorg/DRM/DRI stack. This patch also introduces infrastructure not used by either driver, and since this infrastructure is not used, things are not properly initialized. An issue which affects all via graphics users. And more than 3 months after the root cause was clearly exposed, it still got shipped with openSUSE 11.2. I thought the inclusion wasn't exactly "wise", but the retention of this patch for the new suse release now makes it completely impossible for me to still find ironically understated adjectives. This is X, DRM, DRI and XvMC drivers in one build tree. You can easily build a working drm driver with that one.
