[Bug 727978] New: black screen (backlight enabled) while booting
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=727978 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=727978#c0 Summary: black screen (backlight enabled) while booting Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Factory Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: sven.burmeister@gmx.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:7.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/7.0.1 I used tumbleweed with 11.4, including kernel 3.1 and there was no issue. After dupping 11.4 to 12.1 I get a black screen while booting on my DELL notebook with intel graphics chipset. As soon as X is started the screen shows some content. If I switch to tty1 I do not see any splash or the last boot messages but just a normal login. Using nomodeset helps for booting but results in a low resolution for X. Since bug 669798 states that it happens with any kernel > .37 I do not think it is the same issue. Reproducible: Always -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I also removed /etc/X11/xorg.conf* I'm really surprised this isn't being given more attention, because it's a complete show-stopper on a wide range of hardware. If the problem still exist: 1. To rule out splash screen issues use splash=off as a boot option. 2. Please add drm.debug=0x4 to the boot options to get a better debugging output and attach the output of 'dmesg' right after booting. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Please give KOTD or Tumbelweed a try. I have installed kernel 3.3.0-4-desktop from KOTD with 12.1 and the problem appears to be solved for that.
