According to /var/log/messages this is due to a GPU lockup. The log looks a bit like bug 727227, but the stacktrace is different and this problem causes the system to freeze. It seems as if the driver is trying to reset the GPU, but without any luck. The reset button is the only way to get the system up and running again.
