The iconv(1) on this host is broken:

Michael, can you please advise why glibc-locale has %{_lib} set to /usr/lib instead of /usr/lib64 on x86_64? glibc itself has %{_lib} set correctly.

The packages are okay as far as 64-bit-ness: glibc-2.9-2.10.1-x86_64 glibc-locale-2.9-2.10.1-x86_64 man-2.5.2-17.5-x86_64 Locale is set to LANG=de_DE.UTF-8 as user hm and to "POSIX" as root. Strangely, I cannot read man pages as user but I can as root. The user is presented the menu, like: hm@seneca:~> man less Man: find all matching manual pages * less (1) less (3pm) Man: Welche Manual-Seite wollen Sie haben? Man: and selecting one or the other reveals an empty "less" pager. Root gets no menu choice, and the default man page is displayed just fine, as expected. Methinks this is a permissions problem!? Strace reveals no apparent hint but I'm attaching a transcript nevertheless.
