You're better off installing an older version of grub. 0.97-140 and -148 (iirc) work fine. To get into your broken 11.1 B1 install in order to replace grub, first boot from the 11.1 B1 dvd. Select Installation or Repair Installed System, then hit Abort when the option appears. In the non gui window that comes up, select Start Installation, then Boot Installed System. The firstboot configuration screen should come up and the installation will wrap up. Remove the broken grub, install a working grub and possibly run grub-install. The stage files were still very large, so I replaced them with ones from the box that I had got booting with 0.97-147. Did grub-install as suggested above and I now have that box booting. Good work! as I hadn't noticed those files were so large compared to the ones on the other box. I just noticed that on all boxes (x84_64 all) that the size of the stage files changed to large values after upgrading to the rebuilt 0.97-150.1. Copied the saved stage files from USB stick back to /boot/grub and ran grub-install, the laptop is the only one that reported a problem. I have the exact message of comment #1. I had OpenSuSE 11.0 / WinXP and installed Beta2 reformatting the existing partitions. None of them was encrypted. On VT1 I can see the following message: *** Starting YaST2 *** error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - No such file or directory (2) Use of uninitialized value $globinfo{"trusted_grub"} in string eq at /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.10.0/Bootloader/Core/GRUB.pm line 2000 (#1) (W uninitialized) An undefined value was used as if it were already defined. It was interpreted as a "" or a 0, but maybe it was a mistake. To suppress this warning assign a defined value to your variables. To help you figure out what was undefined, perl will try to tell you the name of the variable (if any) that was undefined. In some cases it cannot do this, so it also tells you what operation you used the undefined value in. Note, however, that perl optimizes your program and the operation displayed in the warning may not necessarily appear literally in your program.
