This is not a useful settings for production servers, because it causes the syslog to be flooded with log messages. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. start net-snmp Actual Results: syslog gets a lot of debug messages from snmpd Expected Results: only important snmpd messages in syslog The problem can be solved easily by modifying the sysconfig file. The comment in the fillup-templates file suggests that this was a deliberate decision. Indeed the setting has been the same for a long time in SLES. ## Path: System/Net-SNMP ## Description: Log level of the snmp server. ## Type: string(!,a,c,e,w,n,i,d,0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7) ## Default: d # # Defines the log level for the snmpd. # # The default is set to d (7, LOG_DEBUG) # This reflects the default for old init script. # SNMPD_LOGLEVEL="d" This remark is already in SLES9 SP4. I am not sure what exactly the term "old init script" is referring to here. However, there is really a lot of log information, so it would be really good to change the default.
