[Bug 776722] New: octave from OBS science repo built against libfltk1 version 1.3, conflicts with htmldoc
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=776722 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=776722#c0 Summary: octave from OBS science repo built against libfltk1 version 1.3, conflicts with htmldoc Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.4 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: ulfie_monster@arcor.de QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; de; rv:1.9.1.19) Gecko/20110420 SUSE/2.0.14-0.2.1 SeaMonkey/2.0.14 The most recent update of octave in the build service repo `science' (to version 3.6.2-19.2; currently installed on my system is 3.6.2-18.1 from that repo) requires libfltk.so.1.3 (and libfltk_gl.so.1.3). While package libfltk1 is available as version 1.3.0 from other build service repositories (e.g. http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/common:/Factory/openSUSE_11.4... ), installing that conflicts with package htmldoc which requires libfltk.so.1.1 . Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Make science and X11:/common:/Factory repos known to YaST 2. Make sure htmldoc is installed (from standard OSS repo). 3. Try installing (or upgrading to) octave 3.6.2-19.2 from science repo. 4. Try resolving conflict by trying to upgrade libfltk1 1.3.0 from X11:/common:/Factory repo. Actual Results: Updating is impossible. Expected Results: octave should not depend on a library version (from yet another repo!) that conflicts with the version required elsewhere (by standard distribution packages). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

You have four possibilities: 1. move on and install new openSUSE -- 12.1 have fltk 1.3.0 or try 12.2-RC2, it even contains octave, no need to have science subscribed at all; 11.4 will run out of maintenance soon anyway, 2. simply keep use an older octave package (zypper lock it), 3. maybe installing science/octave with plain rpm without dependency checking and don't use native graphics would work, too, 4. volunteer to resolve this issue for 11.4 in science repo or build own octave in buildservice. Its really easy, I can help you if you want. Reassigning to you if you want choose 4. Otherwise close this as WONTFIX. Sorry, but maintaining newer versions of octave for 11.4 would be wasting of time. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=776722 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=776722#c2 --- Comment #2 from Ulrich Fieseler <ulfie_monster@arcor.de> 2012-08-24 12:07:13 UTC --- I'll put option 4 on my TODO list (taking that as a chance to learn how to use the build service). As an alternative, I might look into the package(s) currently depending on fltk 1.1 and see if it is possible to build versions depending on 1.3 for these (using build service). Till I find the time, I'll go with option 2. I'd rather not take option 1 already (hoping for the Evergreen project to keep my 11.4 alive for some time) -- I hate installing new versions after less than 18 months already because, apart from the time it takes, too much is lost with every new release (e.g. `jove' has already been lost somewhere around SuSE 7.3, going from 11.1 to 11.4 I lost SweetHome, there isn't even a GCC 4.4.x for 11.4; luckily, at least KDE3 has had continuous support in a build service repo). Option 3 probably isn't really an option; dependencies are there for a reason. But this probably reveals a basic problem of rpm (surely not for the first time, ksysguardd of KDE3 and 4 comes to mind): While it is technically possible to have both libfltk.so.1.1 and libfltk.so.1.3 on a system, this is difficult to achieve (and maintain) with rpm. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

So I'll close this as fixed (please note: credit for this good job goes to someone else, not me!). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
