[Bug 700803] New: Tumbleweed kernel locks up hard, HDD light solid on
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=700803 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=700803#c0 Summary: Tumbleweed kernel locks up hard, HDD light solid on Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Factory Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: seife@novell.slipkontur.de QAContact: qa@suse.de CC: gregkh@novell.com Found By: Third Party Developer/Partner Blocker: --- In order to make my XFS formatted disk spin down when idle again, I installed the tumbleweed kernel on an old compaq nw8000 notebook. Now, I find it sitting around locked up hard (no sysrq, no ping) after a day or two: tv console :0 Wed Jun 15 21:27 still logged in tv tty7 :0 Wed Jun 15 21:27 still logged in reboot system boot 2.6.37.6-0.5-def Wed Jun 15 17:26 - 11:09 (3+17:42) tv console :0 Wed Jun 15 21:17 - down (00:08) tv tty7 :0 Wed Jun 15 21:17 - down (00:08) reboot system boot 2.6.39.1-31-defa Wed Jun 15 17:16 - 21:25 (04:09) tv console :0 Tue Jun 14 12:48 - crash (1+04:28) tv tty7 :0 Tue Jun 14 12:48 - crash (1+04:28) reboot system boot 2.6.39.1-31-defa Tue Jun 14 09:01 - 21:25 (1+12:24) tv console :0 Tue Jun 14 11:52 - down (00:54) tv tty7 :0 Tue Jun 14 11:52 - down (00:54) reboot system boot 2.6.39.1-31-defa Tue Jun 14 09:50 - 12:46 (02:56) tv console :0 Tue Jun 14 06:56 - down (04:53) tv tty7 :0 Tue Jun 14 06:56 - down (04:53) reboot system boot 2.6.39.1-31-defa Tue Jun 14 06:56 - 11:50 (04:54) tv console :0 Sun Jun 12 19:41 - crash (1+11:14) tv tty7 :0 Sun Jun 12 19:41 - crash (1+11:14) reboot system boot 2.6.39.1-31-defa Sun Jun 12 19:40 - 11:50 (1+16:09) The machine is sitting around idle, not doing anything. The syslog does nto show anything suspicious before the hard hang (no cronjob, no logrotate, no mandb,...) I know that this is not enough data to debug this issue, but I wanted to let you know that there is *something* wrong, maybe we'll find a pattern with other reports. Reverting to the 11.4 kernel makes the box run fine. The hardware is not modern anymore, but plain standard: nw8000:~ # lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 82855PM Processor to I/O Controller (rev 03) 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82855PM Processor to AGP Controller (rev 03) 00:1d.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) USB UHCI Controller #1 (rev 03) 00:1d.1 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) USB UHCI Controller #2 (rev 03) 00:1d.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) USB UHCI Controller #3 (rev 03) 00:1d.7 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-M) USB2 EHCI Controller (rev 03) 00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 Mobile PCI Bridge (rev 83) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82801DBM (ICH4-M) LPC Interface Bridge (rev 03) 00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801DBM (ICH4-M) IDE Controller (rev 03) 00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) SMBus Controller (rev 03) 00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03) 00:1f.6 Modem: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Modem Controller (rev 03) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV350 [Mobility Radeon 9600 M10] 02:04.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc.
