Please note that setting the TEMR variable does not (re)program the terminal emulator[1]. The variable does describe the terminal capabilities of an terminal emulator only. [1] AFAIK there is only one terminal emluator which reads its description own terminfo description and this is the XTerm to get the assignment of the backspace key correct (that is return a Delete character or a real BackSpace character).
