I could fix this error. It's due to GRUB_TERMINAL_INPUT not supporting "gfxterm". The text menu was shown because of grub2-branding-openSUSE not installed. You could try installing it and it should bring you a "graphical menu".
Yes, that's the case.

I might have done some steps wrong in the meantime, so I list them below for your proof. By partially working I mean that there is no error related to gfxterm anymore. However, now it complains about POSIX.mo.gz not being available, AND it drops to text mode even though the openSuSE branding is installed. Concerning the latter, before I used Michael's patch I saw this branding, and it's ugly and non-functional (e.g. there's no possibility to edit the kernel settings or runlevel in the graphical mode). I very much hope it will change before the release, though RC1 normally had all the branding ready normally. So, coming back to the patch - you didn't supply me with instructions, so I had to guess: 1. zyppe si grub2 here it complained about non-availability of glibc-32bit, but installed anyway 2. cd /tmp; tar xf /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/grub-2.00.tar.xz 3. patch -p0 -s < ~/grub2.patch 4. ./configure (add freetype2-devel gcc make, patch the configure script to also look in /usr/share/fonts/truetype for dejavu fonts) 5. make; make install 6. grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg # THIS WAS WRONG 7. /usr/local/sbin/grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg 8. reboot (then cp /boot/grub2/locale/en.mo /boot/grub2/locale/POSIX.mo and reboot again) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

error: file '/grub2/locale/de.mo.gz' not found error: terminal 'gfxterm' isn't found.
This error is not supposed be on German language. It's a bug because /boot/grub2/locale is completely empty, which isn't correct as the needed *.mo files are there. I know the reason is in grub2-install uses hard-coded grub.mo which is not present because we transformed the package name to grub2. 12.3? Which is to come in 9-12 months? are you serious? Didn't you SuSE guys decide that a release comes when it's ready, not by a timeplan ? As for the look'n'feel+functionality - if I'm not mistaken grub2 has been running on Fedora and ubuntu for a while already, and there is a version with F1-5 or similar. Why not use things other distros spent time+effort already ?
