[Bug 548523] New: Update causes GRUB to run in an infinite reboot-loop
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=548523 Summary: Update causes GRUB to run in an infinite reboot-loop Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: RC 1 Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: radomir.cernoch@gmail.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- Created an attachment (id=323318) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=323318) Yast logs User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; cs-CZ; rv:1.9.1.3) Gecko/20090909 SUSE/3.5.3-3.2 Firefox/3.0.6 I have tried updating 11.1 => 11.2 RC1. After the first reboot, GRUB only writes: "GRUB Loading Stage1.5" "GRUB loading..." and after a second, the machine restarts, which results in an infinite loop. No menu is shown and the machine is unusable unless booting from DVD or USB. Hardware: ThinkPad T42 I had to repair the machine using openSUSE 11.1 DVD. Strangely reinstalling GRUB with default options from the repair tool did not resolve the problem. In the second attempt "Bootloader location" was set to all "MBR", "Root partition" and "Extended partition". Only after that GRUB started properly. Reproducible: Didn't try -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

My workaround: Installing grub-0.97-156.3.i586 from 11.1 and add "solvable_name: grub" to /etc/zypp/locks. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
