http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=612397 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=612397#c0 Summary: Postgresql fails to load at boot time Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Milestone 7 Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: n5xwb@comcast.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100401 SUSE/3.6.4-1.3 Firefox/3.6.4 As the system booted up "/etc/init.d/postgres start" always failed. First off /etc/init.d/postgresql had the data directory wrong. I corrected it and it still failed to work. So, I downloaded a PostgreSQL version of 8.4.4 (same one openSuSE supplied) and compiled a source version. I installed it over openSuSE's version. I needed to chown -R postgres.postgres /var/lib/pgsql I then did /etc/init.d/postgres start and it now is working. This worked in M6 but fails in M7 Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.cd /etc/init.d/ and run ./postgres start 2.the script took about 5 minutes to fail. 3. It refused to start the server Actual Results: postgresql failed to bring up the server. Expected Results: The sever postmaster should have come ps ax should have shown 31183 tty1 S 0:00 /usr/bin/postmaster -D /var/lib/pgsql/data 31187 ? Ss 0:00 postgres: writer process 31188 ? As the system booted up "/etc/init.d/postgres start" always failed.
I just did a default installation of Milestone7 plus the PostgreSQL packages that are contained in MS7 and "rcpostgresql start" worked out of the box.
First off /etc/init.d/postgresql had the data directory wrong.
You've been claimimg that before, but the init script that comes with our package has a working default for the data directory. Please check where you got that PostgreSQL package from, as I have the suspicion that it is not the one that ships with openSUSE.
So, I downloaded a PostgreSQL version of 8.4.4 (same one openSuSE supplied)
In MS7 we supply version 8.4.3, not 8.4.4, so that might be another indication that you picked up unsupported (by SUSE) packages somewhere. Please check "rpm -q postgresql-server" to see where the packages you have installed really came from. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
