[Bug 1133593] New: Kernel panic during installer detecting hardware on Dell Precision 5530 (nouveau)
http://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1133593 Bug ID: 1133593 Summary: Kernel panic during installer detecting hardware on Dell Precision 5530 (nouveau) Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 15.1 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation Assignee: yast2-maintainers@suse.de Reporter: dawei.pang@suse.com QA Contact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created attachment 803737 --> http://bugzilla.suse.com/attachment.cgi?id=803737&action=edit Leap15.1 panic on DELL Precision 5530 Writing openSUSE-Leap-15.1-DVD-x86_64-Build462.1-Media.iso to USB disk, boot it on Dell Precision 5530, the installer enter panic during detecting hardware, then the machine is shutdown quickly. I only took a photo for the panic information, and not sure how to capture full log during installation in this situation, please refer to attached file. This panic blocks installation on Dell Precision 5530 laptop. According to the panic information, I tried to add boot parameter 'nouveau.modeset=0', installer can boot into GUI interface without panic. The latest tumbleweed build 20190425 can boot successfully without panic. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Instead of nouveau.modeset=0 you may also use nouveau.runpm=0 since it looks like power management is the issue here.
In the end we may need to remove support for this NVIDIA GPU from the nouveau driver or at least usage of PM for this GPU.
Hi Stefan, Thanks for your information! 'nouveau.runpm=0' works on this laptop without panic during installer detecting hardware. -Dawei -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

OK, thanks. Could you give the full kernel message of openSUSE-15.1-UPDATE kernel?
Then, replace the kernel in OBS Kernel:stable repo on the same system, and confirm that it works. If it's OK, get the kernel messages of the working kernel, and upload it, too.
Hi Takashi, The kernel (https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/stable/standard/x86_64/ke... ) from Kernel:stable repo can work without nouveau.run=0 parameter. Uploaded 3 full kernel messages as attachments. The stable kernel (5.0.10) tried change nouveau power state only 1 time, but the leap15.1 kernel tried 3 times then oops/panic. Thanks, Dawei -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Hmmm, nouveau is a wildcard driver for all devices with vendor ID 0x10de, and the chipset is determined by reading some hardware registers...
The kernel logs show this is chipset 0x137 (GP107). The check might have to be more specific (e.g. include chip revision) or less specific (e.g. all GP100 type cards), but for now, I'm writing a patch that disables just this chipset.
It can be easy by checking in the probe function, a patch like below. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Does anyone have a clue if it's a better idea to match cards based on chipset model or PCI IDs?
PCI ID. We may match too many non-affected GPUs with chipset model GP107. Just do a quick Google Search ... So I vote for Takashi's patch here. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
