[Bug 893544] New: default /proc/sys/dev/raid/speed_limit_min too low for nowaday's disks
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=893544 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=893544#c0 Summary: default /proc/sys/dev/raid/speed_limit_min too low for nowaday's disks Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 13.1 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: openSUSE 13.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: suse-beta@cboltz.de QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: Beta-Customer Blocker: --- The default for /proc/sys/dev/raid/speed_limit_min is too low for nowaday's disk sizes: # cat /proc/sys/dev/raid/speed_limit_min 1000 This means it might take _days_ to recover the RAID if you have TB-size disks and some load on the system. Please change the default to a higher value - I'd recommend _at least_ 10000 (= 10 MB/s). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Neil, does it make sense (and it's safe) to change the default value? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I'm certainly open to making it easy for a sysadmin to change the default themselves. Maybe an /etc/sysconfig/mdadm variable that gets written out to /proc/sys/dev/raid/speed_limit_min at boot. I'll put it on my list. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I'm not keen on changing the default.
I understand that you don't want an openSUSE-specific default. OTOH, the current default is terribly outdated. This is something that should be changed in the upstream kernel. I'm quite sure you know where you can submit a patch ;-) Please avoid a sysconfig file - I'd _guess_ /etc/sysctl.conf or /etc/sysctl.d/* would be a better place. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Heh, Neil himself is the upstream maintainer :)

Agreed, this can be simply added in mdadm package. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Not everyone uses modern hardware. If a configuration needs to be changed to match hardware, then it is probably the wrong sort of configuration. It is much better to create a new configuration option that applies more universally. If I update the default for that current (poorly designed) option, that removes the incentive for anyone to create a new better configuration. I'm also not very keen on /etc/sysctl* for configuring modules - what do you do if the module is loaded after 'sysctl' is run? We currently have a horrible hack in 'nfsserver' and 'nfs' init scripts. I don't want the same horror in mdraid. So I still think that sysconfig is the best option. Why don't you like it? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

A good point.

I guess it's because many services don't read/evaluate sysconfig files. But md things already do so, it's probably easy to add it there, indeed. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
