[Bug 689261] New: Kernel module crash with VLAN tagging
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=689261 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=689261#c0 Summary: Kernel module crash with VLAN tagging Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.4 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: alex.wilms@adminguru.org QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:2.0.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0 After creating VLANs everything that accesses the network stack freezes like ping, tcpdump, etc. Deletion of VLAN not possible, even reboot is not possible. Have to turn off hard. Nic is: Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82577LM Gigabit Network Connection (rev 05), so the module is e1000e. Unfortunately dmesg doesn't give any hint, forced unload of 8021q or e1000e doesn't help either. So I have no clue which ov the components cause the trouble. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. modprobe 8021q 2. vconfig add eth0 10 3. vconfig add eth0 20 4. ifconfig eth.10 <IP> 5. ifconfig eth.20 <IP> 6. wait, try to use networking in any way... everything starts to hang 7. vconfig del eth0.10, never finishes -> deleting not possible Actual Results: Network stops responding, hangs whole machine. Expected Results: simply works :-) please let me know what can be done for debugging. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If there is a keyboard attached, are the lights flashing?
No, it's not flashing, as it is not a complete crash. Desktop is "usable", just programs using the network stack freeze/hang. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

seems to depend on the kernel flavor. I can reproduce it on different nic (Intel, Realtek, Nvidia, Broadcom) and different architecture (x86 and x64).
Yes, this matches my observations (Nvidia and Intel, x86_64) It seems, that the kworker threads in the kernel stop working (D state).
but it only occures with the Desktop-Kernel. Xen,default and pae are ok.
AFAIS, the freezes happen only with desktop kernel, default kernel drops packet (much more [50-70%] when there is also bridge)... xen seems to work. See also bug 679685 and bug 678540 (also bug 686567). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
