[Bug 726134] New: kworker is using 100% cpu due to bug in Bios ACPI HP EliteBook 8540w
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=726134 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=726134#c0 Summary: kworker is using 100% cpu due to bug in Bios ACPI HP EliteBook 8540w Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: RC 1 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Minor Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: hardy.heroin+novell@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Beta-Customer Blocker: --- The bug has been reported in the Ubuntu launchpad before but I did not see it in the openSUSE bugzilla so I am reporting it here too. For reference, the bug was reported here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/577702 Steps to reproduce: Install openSUSE 12.1 RC 1 on an HP EliteBook 8540w (and probably other HP EliteBooks) and do nothing. Immidiatly upon startup the kworker/0:2 owned by root and spawned by kthreadd is reporting 100% cpu usage (1 thread, 1 core). Interestingly I only see this using the KDE System Activity manager and top, but not using htop. Expected behavoir: kworker uses very little cpu (1-2% ever few seconds or so) - even that seems a bit much when I idle. Workaround: Run the following command as root: echo disable > /sys/firmware/acpi/interrupts/gpe01 if you run again echo enable > /sys/firmware/acpi/interrupts/gpe01 The kworker starts to consume cpu again. If the bug cannot be fixed I'm hoping at least for a more permanent work around. According to the following article one could add the echo statement to /etc/rc.local, but will this work for openSUSE too? http://www.linlap.com/wiki/hp+elitebook+8740w#kacpid_or_kworker_consume_full... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
