[Bug 964423] New: os-prober incorrectly detects Windows partition (data partition) as "Windows 7 (loader)" when system partition already exists
http://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=964423 Bug ID: 964423 Summary: os-prober incorrectly detects Windows partition (data partition) as "Windows 7 (loader)" when system partition already exists Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 42.1 Hardware: Other OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Bootloader Assignee: jsrain@suse.com Reporter: fcrozat@suse.com QA Contact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- On one of my dual-boot system (with Windows 10 installed as upgrade), I get two Windows boot menu entry from os-prober. First entry is "Windows 10 (loader)", which is properly pointing to Windows "System partition" (with /bootmgr). Second entry is "Windows 7 (loader)", which is the "second" Windows partition (containing Windows installation). However, this second partition should never be booted, since there is a "Windows system partition" already (and trying to boot from there won't work). As noted on https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GRUB#Windows_installed_in_BIOS-MBR_mode , it would be better to not add this second entry at all, if a Windows system partition is already detected. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Use black or white lists of LABELs .. I'd prefer the "black list" and expand that list on demand to not accidentally drop the partition. 2. If use black list of LABELs, how to get the list of LABELs for Windows OS partition by which shouldn't be probed ..? 3. If using white list, does LABEL="SYSTEM RESERVED" and LABEL="SYSTEM RESERVED" covered all cases ? 4. Is there a possibility that system and os partitions the same one, in this case what would be the LABEL ..? Googling a while not revealing good result for those. :( -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

From what I found (http://www.howtogeek.com/192772/what-is-the-system-reserved-partition-and-ca... and other google links), System reserved partition is only used since Win7 and isn't "mandatory" (but is the default when installing on a fresh disk).
But it looks like safe to assume when System reversed partition is detected, other Windows 7/8/10 partitions can be ignored (ie the bootmanager used for Windows is on the system reversed partition. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

The openSUSE 42.1 changed to end-of-life (EOL [1]) status. As such it is no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug. If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of openSUSE, or you can still observe it under openSUSE Leap 15.0, please feel free to reopen this bug against that version (see the "Version" component in the bug fields), or alternatively open a new ticket. Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed during the lifetime of the release.
