[Bug 782470] New: X server exits when cut & pasting
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=782470 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=782470#c0 Summary: X server exits when cut & pasting Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.2 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: bnc-team-xorg-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: lmb@suse.com QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- I know this report is a bit thin, but it has happened twice - first time I discounted as a fluke, but now evidence is mounting that it is a real problem somewhere. I had a maximized gnome-terminal session open (running mc, browsing a file, if that matters), and when I hit shift-<left-mouse-button> to select some text, suddenly the X server forcibly exited. (I couldn't find a core dump.) Next thing I saw as the login screen again; then I did something a bit silly - namely reboot to update the running kernel, which overwrote the previous X.org.0.old logs, so I don't yet have logs of the incident. Nothing in /var/log/messages though. If this rings any bell at all, or if you have recommendations of what logs you might want, do let me know so I can collect them next time. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I noticed a weird thing though - the X server appears to crash (everything terminates etc), the next login screen comes up, X then *immediately* restarts again and only then can I login. (This looks as if the crashing X server leaves the hw in a bad state maybe?) And I've upgraded the kernel just to be sure, but this doesn't affect anything (3.6.0-rc6-3-desktop). Is there perhaps a later X snapshot you want me to test or something? The usability of my system can't get much worse ;-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If you really believe it can't get worse, you can "zypper dup" to obs://X11:XOrg. Good luck! I have it running and working on an openSUSE 11.4 together with current Kernel:HEAD (RADEON card). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The Xorg.0.log.old suggests that it was a clean exit though? I had just rebooted, opened a few terminal windows and wanted to cut&paste something from one to the other; what actually happened though is that X exited while I was selecting text. I wonder how to proceed - is this a crash, the X server misinterpreting something as a desire to exit (I swear I wasn't hitting ctrl-alt-backspace)? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Yes, this looks indeed like a clean/regular exit of the Xserver. Seems your GNOME session is terminated/crashes - for some reason. Possibly you can find the reason in ~/.xsession-errors. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
