Your device name /dev/mbgclock0 might even be a better default value - it looks like this device can/will only be used as a clock source, not for other purposes.
That's true. However, even though we have quite a number of customers who use our PCI cards under openSUSE or SLES, compared to the overall number of those Linux installations the numbers of users of our PCI cards is pretty small, so I don't know if /dev/mbgclock* is a good default. It's sufficient if they can easily be configured.
That's very much different from /dev/ttyS* - serial ports can be used for nearly everything.
