https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=459076 Summary: new grub-install script ignores parameters Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Bootloader AssignedTo: jsrain@novell.com ReportedBy: aspiers@novell.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: Field Engineer This problem exists with both 11.0 and 11.1, but not in SLE10. Somewhere along the way, there seems to have been a change of strategy; now /usr/sbin/grub-install contains: # Instead of the unsupported guessing method of the original grub-install # script, use the grub installation scriptlet generated by yast. but unfortunately this new scriptlet totally ignores all command-line parameters passed, which conflicts with the man and info pages provided. Either the script or the documentation should be fixed. What was the rationale behind this change? What exactly is the "unsupported guessing method"? Does it refer to this section of the info pages? 3.3 Installing GRUB using grub-install ====================================== *Caution:* This procedure is definitely less safe, because there are several ways in which your computer can become unbootable. For example, most operating systems don't tell GRUB how to map BIOS drives to OS devices correctly--GRUB merely "guesses" the mapping. This will succeed in most cases, but not always. Therefore, GRUB provides you with a map file called the "device map", which you must fix if it is wrong. *Note Device map::, for more details. In the case where there is only one hard disk (laptops) I doubt this would ever be wrong. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
