--- Comment #4 from Harald Koenig
The internal laptop panel is not detected (laptop panel detection in X11 driver/server is different than laptop panel detection via SaX2/hwinfo), so the framebuffer resolution (you've chosed for installation) is used as default. This means that the SaX2 behaviour to chose 1600x1200 as monitor resolution is correct.
how can I help debugging/fixing the display detection ? as mentioned above /var/log/Xorg.99.log shows (II) NV(0): LVDS native size 1920x1200 so somehow it should be possible to get the correct data ?! in the mean time I've installed the NVIDIA driver, and here I get some more information in the Xserver output -- maybe these warnings about inconsistent EDID information can explain the problem above ?!? voila: (II) NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA GPU Quadro FX 570M (G84GL) at PCI:1:0:0 (GPU-0) (--) NVIDIA(0): Memory: 524288 kBytes (--) NVIDIA(0): VideoBIOS: 60.84.51.00.00 (II) NVIDIA(0): Detected PCI Express Link width: 16X (--) NVIDIA(0): Interlaced video modes are supported on this GPU (--) NVIDIA(0): Connected display device(s) on Quadro FX 570M at PCI:1:0:0: (--) NVIDIA(0): LEN (DFP-0) (--) NVIDIA(0): LEN (DFP-0): 330.0 MHz maximum pixel clock (--) NVIDIA(0): LEN (DFP-0): Internal Dual Link LVDS (WW) NVIDIA(0): The EDID for LEN (DFP-0) contradicts itself: mode "1920x1200" (WW) NVIDIA(0): is specified in the EDID; however, the EDID's valid (WW) NVIDIA(0): HorizSync range (61.000-73.199 kHz) would exclude this (WW) NVIDIA(0): mode's HorizSync (48.8 kHz); ignoring HorizSync check for (WW) NVIDIA(0): mode "1920x1200".
