That smells like an upstream bug and doesn't seem to be intended. I'll look into it to solve it. For the intention of using a pref to define the default handler for irc I'd say that shouldn't be done that way. gconf should provide a usable default handler for IRC: wolfi@Hygiea:~> gconftool-2 -g /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/irc/command purple-url-handler "%s" (don't know if pidgin currently works that way but anyway.)
