From what you describe is seems your particular printer gets in some cases PostScript which it doesn't like. This indicates that you use a wrong printer driver via a non-matching printer description file (PPD file), see http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:CUPS_in_a_Nutshell
For your model we provide the following PPD files: ----------------------------------------------------------- # lpinfo -m | grep -i 'LaserJet 4M ' gutenprint/stp-hp-lj_4m.5.0.ppd.gz HP LaserJet 4M - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.0.2 gutenprint/stp-hp-lj_4m.5.0.sim.ppd.gz HP LaserJet 4M - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.0.2 Simplified HP/LaserJet_4M-lj4dith.ppd.gz HP LaserJet 4M Foomatic/lj4dith HP/LaserJet_4M-ljet4.ppd.gz HP LaserJet 4M Foomatic/ljet4 HP/LaserJet_4M-ljet4d.ppd.gz HP LaserJet 4M Foomatic/ljet4d HP/LaserJet_4M-Postscript.ppd.gz HP LaserJet 4M Foomatic/Postscript (recommended) ----------------------------------------------------------- Perhaps you may use your printer in PCl mode via HP LaserJet 4M Foomatic/ljet4 for more reliable printing, compare http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Purchasing_a_Printer_and_Compatibility
From my current point of view this is no bug in our software packages so that I close it for now as "wontfix" which means "cantfix" in this case.
