That should not happen. The kernel should boot in any case. If the device is not found, it may not continue, but it would boot until we reach the point it tries to mount.

Did you press ESC, and entered the grub menu on startup? It's the black/white screen, not the green SUSE screen.
Yes, and press 'c' for the commandline..
You can just use the kernel names /dev/sdb11 or /dev/hdb11, or whatever the devices are. You can find out when you type "mount" and look for the "/" entry while the 10.3 system is booted.
Maybe that used to be, but i tried all names, zilch..
