I think all you should need to do is download gconf2-branding-openSUSE in YAST software downloads and Firefox will open from Thunderbird as it should. The hell is that this is a relatively massive download as it installs lots of other things like mono and Tomcat that you don't need to solve this bug so the script solution is more elegant, but for techies.
