All "raw" device names must be converted to meaningful id's, preferably UUID's of the used filesystem it contains, which is what most distros do today. If our preferences are different, we can use physical device id's or labels, but labels just ask for serious trouble with duplicates.
Can't we collect some data from the running system before we do the upgrade? If such information can't be made available to the installer, and the device-name mountpoint relation can not be reliable determined otherwise, I guess the user must be asked at installation time to manually re-assign volumes to mount-points.
