While issuing a command such as touch to create a file on the mounted file system as a regular user, I do not see any cifs error messages/transactions exchanged. It has something do with the the permissions and ownership of the file that gets created on the remote filesystem. By adding something like force create mode = 0766 in the smb.conf, I could create a file that could be edited by regular user.
