--- Comment #2 from Chris Frick 2011-02-22 15:50:23 UTC ---
Tried the kernel-desktop-2.6.38-0.0.42.8344657.x86_64.rpm.
Initially had an unresolved dependency with preload-kmp-...
Uninstalled preload-kmp and YaST installed a number kernel default modules for
2.6.37... as well as different nVidia driver.
Rebooted into new kernel - GDM failed
Rebooted into failsafe OK.
Tried shutdown - still failed.
Reverted to the kernel-default-2.6.37 (instead of kernel-desktop) latest
released version. Fixed the GDM issue. Still cannot restart after a shutdown
without powering off the psu.
I now believe this to be a hardware issue that the kernel can't work around.
I opened a support incident with ASUS. Their answer was basically that some of
their mobos are listed as approved with some older versions of Linux. They do
not support Linux and none of their mobos are approved for any current version
of Linux.
I have been working on this almost every day for that last 3 months.
I have looked at the DSDT - seems to be buggy. Get 201 errors when I try to
re-compile. ASUS no help here. They just said to keep checking back for an
updated BIOS.
It's like the computer goes into a suspend from which it cannot resume.
I have tried Suspend and it works fine.
I have tried Linux Mint 10 64 bit from a different hard drive - same problem.
I have also tried openSUSE 11.2 32 bit without any updates.
The system will now triple boot.
I also tried the ASUS ExpressGate program. A Linux quick boot setup running
from an NTFS partition. It once shutdown correctly.
