https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=687439 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=687439#c0 Summary: Untie Installation Auto Change Of Language and Keyboard - Localisation Issue Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.5 Version: Factory Platform: All OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: scott@aphofis.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-GB; rv:1.9.2.16) Gecko/20110319 SUSE/3.6.16-0.2.1 Firefox/3.6.16 I'll Try one final time to stress the problems that having Dictionary and Keyboard tied together result in a mostly unusable Installation in Australia where there are 4 only Members. This is my 3rd and final try just to get a common sense change or bug corrected as there is NO logic in tying Language to Keyboard type in any English speaking Country except the USA and U.K and last time I looked there are a huge number of English speaking countries where this 'logic' has NO Logic! Australians will NOT use a US dictionary what-so-ever and in the absence of an OZ Dictionary will always select English UK. Upon making this change the installation goes ahead and installs a U.K Keyboard. Australia has never and will never use any other Keyboard call or layout other than default US. Outcome, the Installer will always pick up on the selection of a English U.K Dictionary and change it without hesitation. What the Installer does not realise is that the Keyboard type gets auto changed to a UK Keyboard and is almost assured that this takes place without notice. Result: At the end of the Installation the users Keyboard will not function as we hold the keyboard standard of a US 101 Enhanced. The UK Keyboard has a huge number of different keyboard calls than the US Keyboard. For starters the UK Keyboard Installation will not respond to the Numbers Keyboard pad. Next Uppercase 4 will not give an Australian $ symbol and a vast number of lower and upper case special characters produce very uncertain results! The worst outcome is the KDE installation Configure Desktop will auto contain every U.K convention from currency to location to just about everything we take for granted. Before the new installer gets a change to work out why things just wont work they have already reached for their Windows DVD to reformat the drive and not waste time on they why's There is a small indication at time of boot to change the default Keyboard, however its far too subtle to be noticed. Please just untie the Language version with the Keyboard version and you may very well see a far greater acceptance of opensuse in Australia. There is absolutely No Logic in the current setup what-so-ever in a global market Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Perform an Installation 2. 3. Actual Results: As Above Expected Results: It works correctly and with logic! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
