Could be just coincidence that your CPU has this feature. Did setting the environment variable help? Could be a bit tricky having it set for the Xserver start. And you probably don't want to set it for anything else. And you said the crashes don't happen immediately. Meanwhile there is some environmental variable in glibc for detailed setting of hle instead of turning it off, but I can't remember the name any longer and the possible settings and meanings.
