I tried different formats: rd.luks.key=/usbstick.key:UUID=... rd.luks.key=/usbstick.key:/dev/disk/by-id/... rd.luks.key=/usbstick.key:/dev/disk/by-uuid/... rd.luks.key=/usbstick.key:/dev/sd1 /dev/sda1 is a USB stick with ext4. usbstick.key is a file on the root of the filesystem.
