I am writing in respect of multi boot systems with more than one bootable
devices.
Option - Boot from Master Boot Record option is now quite clear. (That is if
the /boot partition is on the same drive!)
Option - Boot from Root Partition is still not clear. What happens if the
Root Partition is not a primary partition on the disk first in the booting
sequence, but is on a logical partition. It should be explicit that in such a
case the Grub 2 has to start from the MBR. Am I correct?
Option – Boot from the Boot Partition. There are two possibilities (a) /boot
is under /root partition and (b) it is an independent partition. Are both
situations same. Add to that the problem of the partitions being primary or
logical!
Option – Boot from Extended Partition leaves the doubt if it still requires
writing to the MBR of the drive or can the BIOS find the boot loader in the
Extended partition.
Option – Custom Boot Partition: I suppose this is to cater for unusual cases
like my need to boot from USB Flash Memory Drive, involving cross drive
installations. I had to install openSUSE 12.2 on an external drive which is
not bootable (thanks to Seagate policy of not making their GoFlex drives
bootable) and therefore the necessity to boot from USB Flash Drive. However, I
found this requires the /boot partition to be made on the flash drive itself
else an error is reported that there is not enough space! Hence the remark in
the first option.
