Are you doing that on a laptop? because otherwise, NetworkManager will not be active by default and you would need to use (as root) yast2 lan to switch to NetworkManager

No, I am doing it on an Desktop PC, and I know that I have to switch to nm but the global options from yast2 lan offerd only wicked and disabled. In my virtual test machine (at home now) I can select nm and also configure openvpn.
