Truthfully I have never used the mic or the 'phones - I got a new amp and was testing it with my laptop which is why I noticed. I will have a dig in the BIOS and try a couple of livecds. I have ubuntu & gentoo lying around. I'm not installing Windows on it to test - it's not that important :) Will post back my results and if I get no luck we can mark it as a hardware problem.
