I am not sure I can test your test kernel - I need this machine operating stable next month. However, I have applied the same patch to 4.4.162-78-default throughout 4.4.175-89-default, and it works.
Thanks for the reply, no need to test anymore as I managed to get one of the failing devices. As Oliver mentioned this turned out to be a HID parser issue. Once accepted I'll backport it ;).
