I.e.: "Print directly": Workstation -> network printer "Print via a print server machine": Workstation -> print server machine -> printer In the first case it is obvious that all what is necessary to produce a printout (in particular the printer driver) must be installed and run on the workstation. In the second case it depends on which exact service the print server machine actually provides what must be installed and run on the workstation to get a printout. Note that in the second case there is no communication between the workstation and the printer.
