Thanks for your suggestions. I will certainly test them all, however, I would like to point out that both disks work nicely under the currently installed opensuse 10.3.

Per the openSUSE 11.2 log on description of this bug, the machine used pdc202xx_new because add kernel parameter 'hwprobe=-modules.pata'.
