The work is to limit the resolution set with gfxmode='auto', ie the 'preferred mode' advertised by the monitor. The upper limit is FHD 1920x1080 since it is popular nowadays that most grub themes should be designed and tested in a range below it. It is submitted to openSUSE but is not yet released for tumbleweed update, will let you know if available for testing.
