https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=775268 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=775268#c0 Summary: Kernel panic when booting with wrong hardware clock time Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.2 Version: RC 2 Platform: HP OS/Version: openSUSE 12.2 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: andreas@xss.co.at QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=501815) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=501815) Message showing that "your system time is not correct" User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:13.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/13.0 Today I rebooted OpenSuse 12.2 RC2 on my test machine (HP ProLiant DL380 G7) and the kernel paniced shortly after the bootloader handed over to the kernel (see screenshot). A few seconds before the crash, a message "your system time is not correct" was shown on the console (see screenshot) It turned out that the hardware clock was set to a wrong date, though the system has NTP activated (perhaps due to bug #774553) The crash can be reproduced on every boot as long as the hwardware clock is wrong (whatever "wrong" means - how does the system determine a "wrong time" anyway?) When I set the hardware clock to the "right" time manually using the BIOS setup (whatever "right time" means), the system boots fine. When I set the hardware clock wrong again, the crash can easily be reproduced. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Set hardware clock to a "wrong time" (I don't know how "wrong" it must be. A month back seems to be enough) 2. Let the system boot 3. System crashes (kernel panic) shortly after the bootloader handed over to the kernel Actual Results: For a short time the system shows the message "your system time is not correct" on the console (see screenshot). A few seconds later a kernel oops appears on the screen (see screenshot) Expected Results: The system should boot correctly up to its final runlevel, even if the hardware clock is wrong (it can use NTP later to set the right time, anyway) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
