This was after hibernate to disk. It came back, but the cursor was frozen. Then on Ctrl-Alt-Del the entire machine locked up. After power cycling /home (on a separate logical volume) was missing from ftsab. Fixing that meant I lost any X log, but /var/log/messages had plenty of noise.
