The firmware needs about 2 minutes to time-out. Then they vanish, change their product-IDs to either 8401 or 8402 and re-appear as WLAN-devices. I've sent a patch to kernel-ML to add a mode-switch to the ar9170usb-driver, but at least for openSUSE 11.2 / kernel 2.6.31, we need udev-rule to auto-eject the storage-device immediately.
