My test case is as follows: I have a Gateway MX6923b laptop on which I have installed Opensuse 11.0 plus all current updates. I have also got an Asus WL500gP wireless router configured with standard WEP encryption. Now using Windows in my kitchen (which is about 5 metres underneath the router's location separated by a thin wooden ceiling), I can connect to the router every time and the signal strength is reported as very good (something in the 90% region). Using Linux, I usually don't get a connection at all and the wireless network does not show up in "kinternet->Wireless Connections". I have to physically go to my access point, get the laptop to connect and then I can go back downstairs and maintain the connection. However, the signal strength that iwlist and kinternet report is something like 50%. This is quite frustrating as you can imagine... Once it is connected, it usually manages to reconnect but then again sometimes it doesn't... Similarly, Windows seems to pick up all the other wireless networks in the neighbourhood from almost anywhere in the house whereas Linux only picks them up when I get closer to the relevant routers. (As they are all encrypted, I cannot try to connect to them). So, in summary, the Windows driver is better at picking up the signals (ie more sensitive) than the Linux driver.
