The problem has been described already in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-manager/+bug/197253 The fujitsu-laptop module is loaded during boot and gpm tries to dimm the screen when the ac power is detached, but nothing happens. The backlight can be changed manually with xbacklight.
