Thank you for providing the information, but still this is about the whole system. Therefore it's not possible to fix the bug yet, because the info you provided is too general. We need a more specific description - which program does it wrong - which one consumes the memory. Maybe it's not a bug at all, just as Lubos wrote. There can be newly started and still running daemons. So, please run the command 'top' in terminal ('konsole'), as Cyril suggested, before and after doing the memory consuming operations. It will show you some information about actually running processes, including memory consumption. Then, please post the obtained information.
Hi, I performed the same as described in comment 17 (except having some other applications running) - the result was the same as documented in comment no. 20 - the ram was not freed after previewing openGL screen savers Here is the output of the top command before doing that: top - 14:58:04 up 7 min, 3 users, load average: 0.07, 0.52, 0.34 Tasks: 89 total, 1 running, 87 sleeping, 0 stopped, 1 zombie Cpu(s): 3.2%us, 0.8%sy, 0.0%ni, 85.8%id, 0.0%wa, 9.9%hi, 0.3%si, 0.0%st Mem: 507008k total, 439656k used, 67352k free, 15900k buffers Swap: 1052216k total, 0k used, 1052216k free, 289440k cached PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 3808 michal 15 0 30644 16m 12m S 1.9 3.3 0:03.27 ksysguard 3241 root 15 0 313m 20m 5316 S 1.1 4.1 0:08.38 Xorg 3809 michal 15 0 4132 1652 1072 S 0.8 0.3 0:01.50 ksysguardd 3500 michal 15 0 35744 19m 15m S 0.3 3.8 0:00.73 kicker 3811 michal 15 0 32396 15m 12m S 0.3 3.2 0:00.49 konsole 3820 michal 15 0 2252 1020 768 R 0.3 0.2 0:00.13 top 1 root 15 0 740 292 244 S 0.0 0.1 0:00.93 init 2 root RT 0 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 migration/0 3 root 34 19 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 ksoftirqd/0 4 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.02 events/0 5 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 khelper 6 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 kthread 9 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 kblockd/0 10 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.06 kacpid 92 root 20 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 cqueue/0 93 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.02 kseriod 131 root 25 0 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 pdflush 132 root 15 0 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 pdflush 133 root 20 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 kswapd0 134 root 20 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 aio/0 375 root 11 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 kpsmoused 795 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.04 kjournald 846 root 16 -4 1940 620 332 S 0.0 0.1 0:00.49 udevd 1460 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 khubd 1691 root 11 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 pccardd 1868 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 kjournald 2262 root 15 0 2108 668 432 S 0.0 0.1 0:00.02 syslog-ng 2265 root 20 0 1724 552 352 S 0.0 0.1 0:00.00 klogd 2328 root 16 0 1828 676 548 S 0.0 0.1 0:00.00 resmgrd 2330 root 24 0 1584 544 460 S 0.0 0.1 0:00.00 acpid 2334 messageb 15 0 3680 1024 720 S 0.0 0.2 0:00.25 dbus-daemon 2384 haldaemo 19 0 5732 4204 1876 S 0.0 0.8 0:00.72 hald 2388 root 17 0 2948 1108 928 S 0.0 0.2 0:00.02 hald-runner 2422 root 15 0 3564 1528 1320 S 0.0 0.3 0:00.00 polkitd 2551 root 15 0 2588 820 684 S 0.0 0.2 0:00.00 dhcdbd 2562 root 15 0 2996 1324 1140 S 0.0 0.3 0:00.00 NetworkManagerD Here is the output of the top command after doing that: top - 15:03:47 up 12 min, 3 users, load average: 0.70, 1.01, 0.61 Tasks: 89 total, 2 running, 86 sleeping, 0 stopped, 1 zombie Cpu(s): 3.0%us, 0.7%sy, 0.0%ni, 94.7%id, 1.3%wa, 0.3%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Mem: 507008k total, 487896k used, 19112k free, 13644k buffers Swap: 1052216k total, 0k used, 1052216k free, 239520k cached PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 3241 root 15 0 898m 115m 5972 S 1.3 23.3 0:57.97 Xorg 3808 michal 16 0 30856 16m 13m S 1.0 3.3 0:08.81 ksysguard 3809 michal 15 0 4132 1656 1072 S 1.0 0.3 0:04.89 ksysguardd 10 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.3 0.0 0:00.13 kacpid 3811 michal 15 0 32968 16m 13m R 0.3 3.3 0:00.97 konsole 1 root 15 0 740 292 244 S 0.0 0.1 0:00.93 init 2 root RT 0 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 migration/0 3 root 34 19 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 ksoftirqd/0 4 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.02 events/0 5 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 khelper 6 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 kthread 9 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 kblockd/0 92 root 20 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 cqueue/0 93 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.02 kseriod 131 root 15 0 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 pdflush 132 root 15 0 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 pdflush 133 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.04 kswapd0 134 root 20 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 aio/0 375 root 11 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 kpsmoused 795 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.04 kjournald 846 root 16 -4 1940 620 332 S 0.0 0.1 0:00.49 udevd 1460 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 khubd 1691 root 11 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 pccardd 1868 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 kjournald 2262 root 15 0 2108 668 432 S 0.0 0.1 0:00.02 syslog-ng 2265 root 20 0 1724 552 352 S 0.0 0.1 0:00.00 klogd 2328 root 16 0 1828 676 548 S 0.0 0.1 0:00.00 resmgrd 2330 root 24 0 1584 544 460 S 0.0 0.1 0:00.00 acpid 2334 messageb 18 0 3680 1032 720 S 0.0 0.2 0:00.25 dbus-daemon 2384 haldaemo 18 0 5732 4204 1876 S 0.0 0.8 0:00.75 hald 2388 root 17 0 2948 1108 928 S 0.0 0.2 0:00.02 hald-runner 2422 root 15 0 3564 1528 1320 S 0.0 0.3 0:00.00 polkitd 2551 root 15 0 2588 820 684 S 0.0 0.2 0:00.00 dhcdbd 2562 root 15 0 2996 1324 1140 S 0.0 0.3 0:00.00 NetworkManagerD 2581 root 18 0 12272 2044 1740 S 0.0 0.4 0:00.01 NetworkManager 2711 haldaemo 15 0 2024 860 732 S 0.0 0.2 0:00.00 hald-addon-keyb I was unable to copy the output, as it was changing very quickly, but fortunately i know CTRL C from DOS, which was functional here to stop refreshing and enabling me to copy it. For clarity, I attached a screenshot (comment no. 20) taken after doing this memory experiment. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
