The firmware was definitely needed before the update - the BCM 43xx cards doesn't work without a firmware. We don't ship bcm43xx firmware because of licensing issues. You (or somebody else) had to install the firmware before, either using bcm43xx-fwcutter or by copying the files from another system. If the firmware files couldn't be found after the update, there has to be something another involved. One thing I can think of is a change of firmware files names but that didn't happen between the mentioned versions. Overall, there's no change in bcm43xx and only irrelevant changes in ieee80211 between those versions. I also cannot find any change in the firmware loading infrastructure at the kernel side. Another possibility would be a change in the location of firmware files.
