I'm having a similar issue when using the new kernel (2.6.27.19-3.2.1-pae). Hardware is a Dell Latitude D520 with an Intel 945 GM. I'm using GNOME as DE and not KDE. Reverting to the 2.6.27.7-9-pae kernel solves the resume issue. A slight differance in what happens when suspending as what happening with Howard's system: When closing the laptop lid or suspending from within GNOME the laptop tries to suspend but hangs while doing so.. the status indicators (caps lock / scroll lock) start flashing and the system just locks up. Only option is to hard power off the laptop and restart (the ALT SysRq .. seq does not work in this state). Strangely, using ' su -c s2ram ' from a terminal console does work correctly and also resumes the system correctly. As I will be on holiday the next couple of weeks I won't be able to supply any input until I return... still, thought I'd share my findings as they could help pinpoint the source. Both laptos have an Intel video chipset... could that be a first place to look?
