Err, yes, there is a first resize that takes advantage of the 8x8 font.
But then seemingly on the next call to rc_status, the text screen is
resized by half, leaving the bottom half of the screen blank.
The original report said ~24 lines, which is half of the 43 lines which
were obtained by the 8x8 font. Note that these values depend on the
particular VGA/VESA mode that was set, but it seems to be always cut
back by half by the second resize.
I was talking about the stty values during boot too, but in my case
(default installation) setfont is run in rc3, so after blogd is started.
They are always valid (e.g. 25 lines before setfont and after 50
setfont).
The change do not seem to help :/. However, it is probably worth noting
that deactivating parallel boot RUN_PARALLEL=no in /etc/sysconfig/boot,
the problem disappears (even without LINES/COLUMNS change). Putting a
sleep 15 in the kbd script fixes it as well.
I gather then that it's not a problem of LINES/COLUMNS (sorry for the
noise...), but e.g. some ncurses program that runs in parallel and
restores the tty state. I tried disabling various /etc/init.d scripts,
and it appears that running just S05network triggers the bug, but also
running all others except that one triggers the bug too. Does startpar
do stuff with the tty?
