It just relies on changing argv. The ltraces and straces I've seen bear this out. The kernel does fill comm with the last component of the path. Perl 5.10 doesn't call prctl so it doesn't replace it. Perl 5.14 does, which is why you see something different in /proc/pid/stat. Passing on to perl maintainer for further discussion.
