So this doesn't seem to be a packaging problem at least. I'd rather think it's an upstream bug (something not being initialized correctly?), but I'll try with another distribution first before reporting it to KDE.
As expected, I could reproduce the same behavior with Kubuntu 15.10. I reported the problem upstream: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=355589 Closing as UPSTREAM therefore.
